Fai (Louis Koo), Sam (Simon Yam) and Mok (Honglei Sun) are experiencing a painful economic pinch in their lives. To remedy it, Fai opts to pull off a scam with local gangsters and Sam considers killing his newly insured wife. Desperation has definitely set in. One night while discussing their plans at a local bar, a mysterious stranger staggers in and listens closely to the frantic plotting of the three men. This interloper produces an antique gold coin from his pocket and informs them that he can show them the solution to all of their woes. He knows the location of more of these shimmering pieces of relief – all they have to do is dig up the rest. Their payday will have to be earned, though. On the way to these riches the three men must avoid police, the triads, jealous lovers, and angry wives.
TRIANGLE is like a Choose-Your-Own adventure book as read by three legends of Hong Kong Action Film. Directors Ringo Lam (CITY ON FIRE), Johnny To (ELECTION) and Tsui Hark (ONCE UPON A TIME IN CHINA) each contribute a thirty-minute portion with the freedom to take the narrative in whatever their desired direction. The final product is a fresh cinematic experience containing completely unpredictable plot twists and turns. These three talented directors complement one another perfectly, picking up cohesively where the previous one leaves off without the work ever feeling forced. This stylish heist film focuses attention on its characters. Fai, Lee and Mok aren't typical, indestructible yet emotionally bullet-riddled Hollywood action heroes: they are so fleshed out, they bleed. TRIANGLE is a mercury-quick relay race toward an unseen finish line.
