Training Rules is a documentary about homophobia in the athletic department at Pennsylvania State University. Narrated by international swimming great Diana Nyad (National Public Radio), the film looks at the long and homophobic reign of Rene Portland, the coach of Penn State’s women's basketball team whose three rules for her players were: no drinking, no drugs and no lesbians. The film explores how Portland's methods went beyond "don't ask, don't tell" to shattering the dreams of talented female athletes who were, or were thought to be, lesbian. The piece also examines how institutionalized homophobia allowed Portland to go unchecked for 26 years. In 2006 one courageous basketball player, Jennifer Harris, along with the National Center for Lesbian Rights, sued Portland and Penn State. Because of Jennifer Harris' courage other women victimized by Portland came forward. Their stories, explored in this wonderful documentary by Academy Award nominee Dee Mosbacher and Fawn Yacker, exposes both the damage inflicted by Portland as well as the triumphs of the women she sought to destroy.

Preceded by: Freeheld: The Legacy of Laurel Hester, Dir. Cynthia Wade, US, 2007, video, 38 min. Winner of the 2008 Academy Award for Short Documentary, Freeheld tells the heart-wrenching story of Laurel Hester and her partner as they fight for justice on behalf of all LGBT couples. A former police officer, Hester is diagnosed with terminal cancer. Tragically, the New Jersey County in which she lived and worked does not offer benefits to domestic partners. Watch and be amazed to see who sides with her: you’ll witness how allies sometimes come from the unlikeliest places. A triumphant and beautiful film.
