“One singular sensation” is more than a memorable lyric from a joyfully infectious tune: it is at once a great description of both A Chorus Line the stage musical from which it comes and of John D. Stern and Adam Del Deo's fantastic documentary film, Every Little Step. In 1974 Broadway darling Michael Bennet gathered a group of stage dancers, affectionately known as gypsies, together and recorded their life stories. It is from those very recordings that the world-wide hit musical A Chorus Line was born. For the first time, we are taken back to those confessional sessions and hear excerpts from the actual recordings as the filmmakers follow the creation of the original stage show, and then its recent revival while introducing us to the original cast and creative team and the budding talent who are auditioning. Stern and Del Deo show the clear parralells that exist among the real-life casting, rehearsals and creation of the revival, the process so eerily echoing the plot of A Chorus Line itself: artists trying desperately to stand out from the unidentifiable gloss of the rear, and onto center stage. It is nothing short of a brilliant example of life imitating art. An obvious choice for musical lovers, Every Little Step is a superbly made film that brings an audience together for a journey that is exhilarating, heartbreaking, and completely unforgettable.
