Capitalizing on the success of her short film Succubus and the real-life pregnancies of her two lead actresses Angela Vint and Megan Fahlenbock, Alison Reid’s feature debut The Baby Formula charms us with a humorous take on what happens when lesbians decide to start a family. Married Canadian lesbians Athena and Lilith take the concept of creating family to a whole new level when they decide to try an experimental scientific process to produce sperm from their own stem cells, and both wind up preggers. An innocent documentarian intent on getting the whole story gets more than she bargained for when Athena and Lilith’s extended family enter the picture with enough dirt on the girls to fill the Grand Canyon, including a brother-inlaw who claims he is in fact the biological father. All’s well that ends well when almost full-term Athena and Lilith set the record straight, if you will, and dance off into the sunset lip-syncing to the Black-Eyed Peas song “My Humps”. This mockumentary plays against Bush Era stem cell policy and traditional notions of family with a great sense of friskiness. The supporting performances are strong and offer many of the situational big laughs in the film. Seeking comic relief from the real world legal battles facing the community? The Baby Formula will renew your spirits.
