Detractors claim it breaks up marriages and friendships, leads to loss of job productivity, breeds addiction, and can cause a profound disconnection from reality. Defenders counter that it allows them to overcome geographic and physical limitations in order to meet like-minded companions and imbue their lives with greater equality, control, and freedom. But whichever way you look at it, there's no denying that Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Games (MMORPGs, or MMOs) such as World of Warcraft, Everquest, and Second Life have gained enormous popularity, with 35 million players worldwide. The games are big business-World of Warcraft's latest version grossed $36 million more on its release date than the largest one-day film gross in 2007. But to gamers, MMOs are more than entertainment; they are a way of life.
SECOND SKIN focuses on three sets of gamers: a group of four close-knit male friends dealing with growing pains as they balance their WoW raids with starting their own families, a long-distance couple who fell in love through Everquest and are about to meet in person for the first time, and a self-proclaimed addict who enters a twelve-step program after spending as much as 18 hours a day online. Cleverly integrated footage of various games complement the development of each gamer's story, and as experts weigh in on the growing phenomenon, the film raises significant questions about how virtual worlds can affect what we currently consider to be reality.
