Poetic melodies in remarkable works of Sergei Rachmaninoff, Clara Schumann & Andre Previn. The Four Songs/ by Andre Previn with works by Nobel Prize and Pulitzer Prize-winning American author, Toni Morrison, represent a wonderful piece of truly American music. Using poems by Toni Morrison as lyrics, Previn composes with his trademark blend of classical and jazz idioms. The four movements/poems are titled: Mercy; Stones; Shelter; and The Lacemaker. Each text is rich with layers of meaning and the music complements them beautifully. This program ends with the Piano Trio in G Minor. by Clara Schaumann containing a slow movement, Andante, filled with an atmosphere which is highly romantic and exudes the aura of a very effecting Song Without Words a la Mendelssohn.
