It's About Steppin' In The Hood

Director/Producer: Julie Alexander
Camera: Mike Quinones
Editors: Rich Jegen, Jonathon Rogers
Assistant Project Director: Jeremy Childs

In June of 2006, through funds provided by the Tennessee Arts Commission Funds for At Risk Youth and Memorial Foundation grants awarded through the Nashville Film Festival, inner city teens came together the Preston Taylor Boys and Girls Club from different Nashville neighborhoods to film a story that is very close to their hearts. On the final weekend of the four-week project they made their short Steppin' in the Hood, a drama about kids from the hood dealing with love, gangbanging, and a talent for stepping, working with a top-notch Nashville professional film crew and Memphis director Craig Brewer (Hustle and Flow, Black Snake Moan). It was both an exciting and scary experience - here they were, working with top pros and a successful director for their first film! It's About Steppin' In The Hood documents the entire process, showing teens with strong opinions going through all the ups and downs in the creating, the writing, the rehearsing, and finally the shooting, and coming through as friends in the end. Along with this documentary you will see the completed short Steppin' in the Hood, directed by Craig Brewer, with cinematography by Lou Chanatry and music by Memphis hip hop artist Al Kapone.
