Description

Pens to Lens pre-movie short: THE 9TH ANNUAL COMMUNITY OPPOSITE DAY (Written by Aidan Henry, Directed by Charlie Kessler)

A heart-warming drama, AKEELAH AND THE BEE is the story of Akeelah Anderson (Keke Palmer), a precocious eleven-year-old girl from south Los Angeles with a gift for words. Despite the objections of her mother Tanya (Angela Bassett), Akeelah enters various spelling contests, for which she is tutored by the forthright Dr. Larabee (Laurence Fishburne); her principal Mr. Welch (Curtis Armstrong) and the proud residents of her neighborhood. Akeelah’s aptitude wins her a spot in the Scripps National Spelling Bee and in turn unites her neighborhood who witness the courage and inspiration of one amazing little girl. (2006, Doug Atchison, U.S., English, 112 min., PG)

“It’s the kind of movie parents will want their kids to see as opposed to much of what’s playing at the multiplex.” — Ruth Stein, San Fransisco Chronicle

“The story of Akeelah’s ascent to the finals of the National Spelling Bee makes an uncommonly good movie, entertaining and actually inspirational, and with a few tears along the way.” — Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times.
