MusicIC: The Dark Side of the Moon

As part of the 2018 MusicIC, the Iowa City UNESCO City of Literature presents the Solera Quartet performing an arrangement of Pink Floyd’s classic LP, The Dark Side of the Moon. This new arrangement captures the otherworldly mystique of the original, placing it in a new context through the shift in instrumentation. Joined by a drummer and vocalist Meagan Brus, the group will explore this seminal work of progressive rock while area writers, including Jan Weismiller (co-owner of Prairie Lights Books) and Nick Twemlow, read original writing on the topics addressed in the original work such as time, money, and madness. Accompanying the performance will be a projection of the filmed light improvisation “Invisible Writing” by famed '60s light show pioneers Single Wing Turquoise Bird. The concert opens with Osvaldo Golijov's Tenebrae, a piece inspired by the composer's visit to the New York Planetarium where he "could see the Earth as a beautiful blue dot in space." This is a repeat performance of Tenebrae by the Solera Quartet, back by popular demand.
