Description

August 18 and 19 - Friday and Saturday at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. both days., with a book club discussion on Friday at 6:15 p.m. Scheduled to show on 35mm film.

What it is: An insurance salesman falls in love with a femme fatale who has murderous designs on her husband. Based on the novel by James M. Cain, Double Indemnity is one of the landmark films in the noir genre, rife with mystery, double crosses and iniquitous intent.

Why we're showing it: Double Indemnity is considered one of the all-time best noirs, helping to set the template for the genre. From a script written by Hollywood legend Billy Wilder and one of the greatest detective novelists Raymond Chandler, Double Indemnity also showcases the talents of Fred MacMurray, Barbara Stanwyck, and Edward G. Robinson. Its influence is still felt today, and it's one of the top-ranking films on the AFI list of the best American Films of all-time.

But wait, there's more: The Artcraft Book Club meeting will be held at 6:15pm on Friday, immediately before the film, in the Artcraft cottage at 49 E Madison Street. Presented in partnership with the Wild Geese Bookshop (just across the street from the cottage), the Artcraft Book Club explores the relationship between the written word and cinema, connecting adapted films with their source material. To attend, purchase the Friday, 6:15 p.m.  ticket (which includes entry to the film). Attendance is limited to 15 people. FHI members can reserve up to 2 complimentary tickets. Books may be purchased in advance from the Wild Geese Bookshop - book purchase is not required to attend. The Book Club will include in-depth discussions including plot points, so please be aware if you have not yet seen the film or read the book.

If you are feeling unwell or have been in contact with a sick individual, for the safety of others, please do not attend. Refunds are available for illnesses - please contact the Will Call office by phone or email.

Effective June 1 2022, the Artcraft is instituting a 3.25% fee on credit card orders to cover the cost of credit card company fees.
