Film Synopsis: Dipti, Amrita, and Ritu are all young, modern women in India, who find themselves in the situation millions of young Indian women face. The pressure for women to get married at a "reasonable age" is all consuming, not only for the women themselves but for their families. As modern women, they may wish to strike out on their own, and yet the institution of arranged marriage is ever present and overpowering within the culture. “A Suitable Girl” follows the three women over the course of four years as they struggle with beloved family traditions, modern careers, their friends – married and unmarried – all while trying to make sense of their contemporary lives within the context of the ancient social contract of the arranged marriage. “A Suitable Girl” challenges conventions in the most sensitive manner. We are compelled to care about the women and their struggles, as they lay bare their fears, their anxieties, and their ultimate courage.
