Cap off Heartland Film’s Cultural Journey: India experience with a closing night screening of the film Hotel Salvation at the Indiana Historical Society.

Film Synopsis: An ominous dream convinces 77-year-old Dayanand Kumar that his end must be near. He breaks the news to his son Rajiv, making it very clear that he must go immediately to the holy city of Varanasi in order to end the cycle of birth and rebirth to gain salvation. Being the dutiful son, Rajiv, grudgingly, drops everything to accompany his eccentric father and checks him into Mukti Bhawan (Hotel Salvation). Hotel Salvation is a guest house in Varanasi, specifically devoted to the people who come to die. As the days pass Rajiv becomes increasingly frustrated, as his father seems to flourish in the hotel with new friends, new activities, and Rajiv is left alone to cope with his increasingly tenuous employment situation.

Hotel Salvation humorously and respectfully illustrates the traditional Hindu philosophy of death and freedom from entrapment and attachment. One hopes that in contrast to Rajiv's relationship with his father, his daughter’s rebellious generation will find the joy and freedom that have escaped him and find the courage to live life on her own terms.
