Description

Part of the inaugural "Best Foreign Language Award Contender" Sidebar featuring 10 films submitted to the 2018 Academy Awards as their respective country's official entry for "Best Foreign Language Film."

Country: France
Distributor: The Orchard
Film Synopsis: In Paris in the early 1990s, a group of activists goes to battle for those stricken with HIV/AIDS, taking on sluggish government agencies and major pharmaceutical companies in bold, invasive actions. The organization is ACT UP, and its members, many of them gay and HIV-positive, embrace their mission with a literal life-or-death urgency. Amid rallies, protests, fierce debates and ecstatic dance parties, the newcomer Nathan falls in love with Sean, the group’s radical firebrand, and their passion sparks against the shadow of mortality as the activists fight for a breakthrough.

Disclaimer from International Film Programmer Hannah Fisher:
We request that our audiences keep an open mind in viewing these films – as all are selected by the country of origin as the most representative film of the year. Some of the films may be unusual for Heartland Festival, but all films in this category will have been selected by various industry organizations, along with funding bodies and government agencies. Films in the “Foreign Language Best Picture Contender” sidebar contain mature themes and strong content.
