Without a doubt, Romeo and Juliet is Shakespeare’s most famous play and yet... while most common stagings focus on a universal tale of love and hate, there is in Shakespeare’s text something much darker and much more complex, making the romance only seem like a backdrop. “There’s a black sun in this story, and this is what we ought to look into”, according to director Éric Ruf.

Rarely staged in France, William Shakespeares classic made its return to la Comedie-Francaise in 2015 for the first time in about 50 years. Rufs take on the play remains as close as possible to Shakespeares original masterpiece: "In a Southern Italy where the sun hits town squares and heats up peoples minds... An Italy of vendetta where vengence, death are inherited from a generation to the other..."

Eric Ruf is also responsible for the scenography of the play and collaborated with Christian Lacroix, a regular at la Comdie-Franaise, as costume designer.

Home to Molires historic theatre troupe, la Comdie-Franaise is Frances most respected and most prestigious theatre, created in 1680 at the Sun King Louis XIVs request. Located in the heart of Paris next to the garden of the Palais Royal, this State institution is the only one in the country to have its own dedicated company of actors, among which Guillaume Gallienne, Denis Podalyds, Laurent Lafitte and Dominique Blanc. For the first time, Frances historical stage La Comdie-Franaise comes to global audiences live from Paris in cinemas worldwide with three timeless classics, thanks to a new partnership with Path Live.
