Description

If often sad and unsettling, the film is also livelier and less oppressive than it may sound thanks to the fine writing, deft direction by Adrian Noble, and the superb, if painful interplay between Redgrave and Spall." – Gary Goldstein, LOS ANGELES TIMES

"Within three or four short exchanges she establishes Mrs. Lowry as one of the great maternal monsters of cinema, up there with Faye Dunaway in ‘Mommie Dearest’ or Piper Laurie in ‘Carrie’." – Kevin Maher, TIMES (UK)

"On the screen, Mrs. Lowry and Son, much like one of Lowry's own paintings, is a wee gem on a small canvas, full of loving details within its apparently simple and unadorned style." – Graeme Tuckett, Stuff.co.nz

An intimate portrayal of the relationship between one of the greatest artists of the 20th century, L.S. Lowry (Timothy Spall) and his unhappy and controlling mother, Elizabeth (Vanessa Redgrave). Spending his days as a rent collector, artist L.S. Lowry took art classes in the evening and painted well into the early hours of the morning. At the beginnings of his career, as he yearns to transition into having his work appreciated in London and beyond his disdainful mother is the ultimate obstacle to his success, not his lack of talent. However, Elizabeth is the very reason Lowry paints anything at all, as he desperately seeks to create something, anything, which will make her happy.
