Marshall Ngwa (a.k.a. renowned drag performer BeBe Zahara Benet) came to the United States from homophobic Cameroon with dreams of a better life, and became the first winner of RuPaul’s Drag Race in 2009. BEING BEBE follows Marshall’s remarkable immigrant journey from the earliest days of his amateur drag performance career in Minneapolis, circa 2006, to his emergence as one of the leading artists in the movement to celebrate and advance Queer Black Excellence during the 2020s. With over 15 years of unfettered and intimate access to Marshall’s story, the film presents his unique love affair with performance alongside his unstoppable sense of persistence and purpose, offering an unprecedented portrait of an artist who chooses to live a creative life against all odds.

Join us for a special reception in honor of the Provincetown Film Festival's Closing Night Selection BEING BEBE. Guests of honor include director Emily Barham, producer Marc Smolowitz, and the film's subject and star BeBe Zahara Benet, the winner of the very first RuPaul's Drag Race. This reception will also celebrate the close of our 23rd annual film festival, which rose from the embers of the pandemic to return world class film screenings and discussions to Provincetown.

Come celebrate with us with a “closing night” reception on June 24th from 3:30-5pm at the Crown & Anchor, 247 Commercial Street, Provincetown. Meet the filmmakers, enjoy a cash bar and nibbles of food.  Complimentary cocktail at 5pm for guests to stay on for dinner.
