With her debut feature, and based in The Netherlands, Bosnian filmmaker Ena Sendijarevic proves herself already an artist of consummate style and tone. The lethargy of Sendijarevic’s characters allows ample time to savor her colorful, eye-catching compositions. Full of peculiar angles and sun-drenched vibrancy, the liveliness of the framing contrasts the dour aimlessness of three teenagers on an odyssey through modern Bosnia. Irrepressible beauty and sensuality play strange bedfellows to the deadpan ennui that inflicts these characters’ emotional lives, hampered as they are by grim prospects in a country short on opportunity.
