Are crows ever white? Of course not. Crows Are White borrows its title from a story about a Buddhist monk who was taught never to question his teachers, even when they said things that were objectively wrong. Ahmed Nahseen, a fresh new voice in nonfiction filmmaking, takes the long road to find ways to question the traditions of his Muslim parents, in particular the command to marry another Muslim. After decades of living a secret life, he travels to a strict Japanese monastery in search of guidance, but the only monk who will help him prefers ice cream and heavy metal over meditation. Nahseen tells us early on in the film: “I’ll be honest with you, I’m a fantastic liar. But I’m trying something new here — I’m going to try to tell the truth.” Crows Are White is an honest and irreverent exploration of truth, faith, and love. While the film’s ending scene may be worthy of Hollywood, Nahseen’s humorous voice, his mishaps en route, and the movie’s low-key score make this a true indie film. ~OY *** This screening will be followed by a Zoom Q&A with the Director***
