Theater Presents:
Urban Jeli,
Traditional Priests Rooted in American Places
Urban Jeli, Traditional Priests Rooted in American Places, is an
interdisciplinary performance incorporating music, dance, and film in an
exploration of African retentions and continuances in African American cultural
traditions of dance and music from the perspectives of jeli or griots as living
storytellers and the embodied spirituality of priests of traditional religions.
The performance features choreography by VashtiDance Theater’s Artistic
Director, Fatima Logan-Alston and musical composition by Musical Director,
David Alston that spans aesthetics from West and Central Africa, jazz, funk,
Hop-Hop and Contemporary perspectives in a celebration of the resiliency of the
African Diaspora in America.
VashtiDance Theater exists to uplift, empower, inspire, and educate our
community through dance and music performances, workshops, and events that
blend the vernacular, traditional, and classical, to create a contemporary
perspective that is genuine and authentic. VashtiDance Theater’s performances
feature live music and innovative dance works in a dance theater experience
that is thought provoking and examines the fundamental essence of the human
struggle, including self-realization, cultural and historical awareness, and a
vision for a positive united society.
