What it is: A slick, hustling press agent named Sidney Falco tries to ingratiate himself with powerful entertainment columnist J.J. Hunsecker, who asks Sidney to break up a relationship between Hunsecker's sister and a jazz guitarist.
Why we're showing it: Featuring Tony Curtis as Sidney Falco and Burt Lancaster as J.J. Hunsecker, Sweet Smell of Success is a noir without the crime trappings, exploring the seedy underbelly of New York's entertainment industry and the dangers of unchecked ambition and greed. Although a box office failure on release, the crackling script courtesy of Clifford Odets and Ernest Lehman and dark cinematography of James Wong Howe has allowed Sweet Smell of Success to be properly reappraised as a true classic of 1950s cinema.
