The uplifting story of a young athlete, Samia by Yasemin Samderelli. Samia is based on the book "Don’t Tell Me You’re Afraid" by Giuseppe Catozzella and inspired by the true story of young Somalian sprinter Samia Yusuf.
At the age of nine, Samia Yusuf Omar discovers that she can run faster than anyone else. She and her best friend Ali hatch a plan to use this talent to become rich and famous. But then civil war breaks out in Somalia and things are no longer the same. Samia won’t let this stop her, however. She continues to race to the top, both in her own country and in exile.

“A beautiful visual flair and a warm, empathetic approach. Boasting fantastic performances, SAMIA is an inspirational portrait of a young athlete who won’t let circumstances stop her from reaching her dreams. And like millions of others escaping nations ravaged by war, she risks her life for the hope of a better future.” - Jason Gutierrez, Programmer at Tribeca Festival
