In the world of cinematic badass-ery, few are as prominent as Pam Grier, and Coffy offers her signature performance. Grier plays Flower Child Coffin (seriously), better known as Coffy, a nurse by day who, by night, wreaks vengeance on the criminal scumbags responsible for her young sister’s heroin addiction. Frequently violent, occasionally a bit less than tasteful, but never less than compelling, the movie is a showcase for Grier’s uniquely intense screen presence and she makes the most of it. A defining moment in the so-called Blaxploitation movement of the ‘70s (we prefer the term ‘Black Action Movies’), Coffy hits all its spots – killer pimps, corrupt cops, a phenomenal score (from jazzman Roy Ayers), sex, drugs, but mostly…Pam Grier, an icon in action.
