Sam Raimi has gone on to much bigger things, playing an outsized role in setting off the superhero boom in the 21st century, for better and worse, and shepherding a misbegotten entry in the Doctor Strange series. but it's fair to say that his biggest cinematic milestone is Evil Dead II, quite possibly the greatest horror-comedy ever. This sort-of sequel to his massively influential regional splatterfest, The Evil Dead, is bigger, funnier, zanier, and scarier. With a leg up from Stephen King, Raimi hooked up with producer Dino De Laurentis to secure a sizable enough budget to really paint the town... er, the cabin in the woods... red. Bruce Campbell gives a career defining performances as Ash Williams, throwing himself into every cartoonish set piece with total conviction and unrivaled slapstick chops, and emerging as a square-jawed, chainsaw-wielding action stud for the ages.
