AMERICAN AGITATORS tells the remarkable story of Fred Ross, who organized for social change through much of the 20th century, and who mentored and inspired such iconic organizers as Cesar Chavez, Dolores Huerta and his own son, Fred Ross Jr. Today, many of the activists who are devoting their lives to the pursuit of justice and equality are continuing to use Ross’s techniques.
For over 50 years, Ross led a groundbreaking organizing approach that improved the lives of thousands, inspiring them to act to improve their lives.
Now, generations of organizers and activists, many of whom are featured in AMERICAN AGITATORS, stand on the shoulders of Ross and his son. The message of the film is simple: If Fred Ross could organize for systemic change and improve the lives of marginalized people, it’s possible for all of us to do it today.
Fred, Sr. lived in Mill Valley and Fred, Jr. grew up in Corte Madera and went to Redwood High school. He followed in his father’s footsteps, organizing various labor actions, leading boycotts, and helping get Nancy Pelosi elected to Congress. The filmmakers are all local to Marin and the Bay Area, and will be attending the screening for a Q&A.
