A conscious throwback to the gritty New York films of the 1970s, Noah Segan’s The Only Living Pickpocket in New York oozes cinematic nostalgia. John Turturro, in a rare starring role, offers a note-perfect performance as Harry, an old-school, analog pickpocket who picks the wrong pocket, then has to fight for survival against some very mean 21st-century bad guys. Harry’s best friend is his fence, Ben (Steve Buscemi), and the film’s best scenes are these two longtime New York–centric actors just sharing a space together. New York City plays a prominent role in the film, and it’s a pleasure to watch Turturro navigate the city, whether on foot or via subway, accompanied by lots of good needle-drops. Jamie Lee Curtis even pops in! ~SM
