Winner, Silver Bear for Best Leading Performance, 2026 Berlin International Film Festival In the 17th century, somewhere in war-ravaged central Europe, a disfigured soldier rides into a village and claims his inheritance, a small abandoned farmstead. Suspicious and hostile, the community gradually comes to see the newcomer as a hard-working, brave individual worthy of their respect and fellowship. But a marriage to a neighbor’s daughter complicates matters, and it slowly becomes clear that the newcomer harbors a shocking secret. Schleinzer’s deft, beautiful tale features an ever-phenomenal Huller in peak form with a huge assist from Caro Braun as Rose’s wife. Grim and dirt-streaked, the film is also visually arresting and thoroughly engrossing, with top-tier production design, and B&W cinematography . ~SM
