Q&A with director Michael Kofler following the screening Drawing on a European conflict little-known to most Americans, first-time feature director Michael Kofler dramatizes the violent separatist movements that rocked South Tyrol, the northern Italian region that borders Austria, in the early 1960s. His film focuses on a pair of brothers—Anton, the political firebrand moved to ever-more-antagonistic ends to protect the region’s German-speaking minority, and Paul the artist, who longs to leave the area behind and start elsewhere. When Anton engages in an act of political terrorism, Paul is placed at a moral crossroads, life is turned upside-down, and everyone must make some difficult decisions. While Kofler’s film takes on the dimensions of a family drama, its thematic focus hones in on political radicalization and the fatal spiral of violence. ~SM
