A melancholy hit man with a habit is hired to get rid of a Japanese night club/bar owner. A true professional, the assassin meticulously plans out the job. He steals a car. He makes a plan with his long-suffering lover so that her husband will catch him leaving her apartment right after the job is complete, so as to set up his alibi. The contract is executed with perfection. Our assassin enters the club filled with revelers. He makes his way to the office in the back. He finds his target and shoots him dead. But things don't quite go as planned. Produced on location in Manhattan, Queens, and Brooklyn and inspired by the French New Wave Movement and Jean-Pierre Melville's classic noir film Le Samourai, The Assassin was made in the truest spirit of guerrilla filmmaking, using Dogma techniques and shot almost entirely with available light (with some great period music judiciously added). This moody, contemporary film noir is set against the backdrop of New York City in a post 9/11 world. Nashville native/TSU grad Devin E. Haqq directs and stars in this cool character study of a loner dedicated to his craft.
