CHILDREN OF THE DECREE by Florin Iepan & debate

In 1966, the Communist authorities in Romania passed the Decree-Law no. 770, prohibiting all abortions, regardless of stage or health factors. The Decree had an overwhelming impact on Romanian society, due to alarming birth rates during the 23 years it remained into force: official figures estimate over 2.5 million children were born, known as ”Children of the Decree/Decreteii”.

The documentary focuses on the social and political impacts of the Decree, regarded as one of the most significant social experiments of mankind.

The screening will be followed by the debate ”Engagement with the Communist past through cinema” (with the support of SNSPA and Loyola University Chicago)
