Stargazing with Russell Crotty

Taft Gardens and Nature Preserve invites you to explore the night sky with visiting artist and astronomy enthusiast Russell Crotty, along with assistance from his wife, Laura Gruenther. Perched above the Gardens, our Vista Point is the perfect locale for nighttime sky observation. As dusk falls, guests will be invited to enjoy the view while Russell and Laura offer a short background on astronomy and the basics of night sky observing. Once darkness falls, they will describe the celestial objects as we view them through an array of telescopes.

What to bring:

  • Water
  • A light picnic dinner if you plan on arriving early.
  • Comfortable closed toe walking/hiking shoes. Ground may be uneven.
  • Insect repellent. Mosquitos are out this time of year so plan accordingly
  • Comfortable layered clothing so you may adjust to weather/temp.
  • A bag such as a day pack or knap sack in which to keep your things.
  • Binoculars if you wish.
  • A flashlight that can have red cellophane put over it with a rubber-band or a headlamp/flashlight that already has a red light feature. The red light is important to be able to not ruin your night vision. Red cellophane and rubber band will be provided, but NOT a Flashlight!
