In a vital performance in the pantheon of film noir, Rita Hayworth plays Gilda, the much-lusted-after wife of a criminal kingpin and the former flame of his bitter henchman, driving them both mad with desire and jealousy on the glittering floor of a Buenos Aires casino. Charles Vidor's 1946 film is one of the high points of postwar romanticism, simultaneously snide and sentimental. GILDA was notably produced and co-written by Virginia Van Upp, one of Hollywood’s first female executives.
