In 1963, Esther gives birth to Roland, the youngest of a large family. Roland is born with a club foot that prevents him from standing. Against everyone's advice, she promises her son that he will walk like the others and that he will have a fabulous life. From then on, Esther will do everything in her power to keep this promise. When Brian Epstein set foot in the Cavern Club in November 1961 to watch The Beatles perform, he saw something no one else could – a glimmer of gold. Sharply dressed and well-spoken, Brian was hardly the most obvious radical – but being Jewish, closeted and having grown up as an outsider who had failed at pretty much everything, he was a 26-year old with something to prove and who wanted to tear up the rulebook. To kick off the night in style, we’re thrilled to welcome a fantastic Beatles tribute band -- the Fab 3 -- who will perform before the film begins. The band includes Ken Brown, Frank Muller and Randy Solomon, who are members of the Alta Rockers, and have each been playing Beatles tunes for as long as they can remember.

The Sea: Khaled, a 12-year-old boy from a Palestinian village, gets the chance to see the sea for the first time in his life on a school trip. But when they reach a military checkpoint, the soldiers claim his permit is invalid and send him back home, while his classmates continue their trip. Deeply disappointed, Khaled sets out to the sea on his own, even though he doesn’t know the way and doesn’t speak Hebrew. When his father, Ribhi, an undocumented laborer working in Israel, learns that his son is missing, he leaves his job in search for him—risking arrest and the loss of his livelihood. This program will open with a special short film titled Making Awareness, directed by Susan Wasserman, who will join us to discuss her film and answer audience questions. Making Awareness tells the story of two Israeli street artists who spread awareness through their "Kidnapped from Israel" poster campaign on the streets of New York to aid in the release of hostages taken on October 7th, 2023.
